Winter 2010-2011 Preparation

Meet Jon!

Jon Storer will be helping me with the route this year.  I met Jon a while back after working with his younger brother several years ago.  Jongrew up in Bedford and will be managing the billing and, more importantly, bring another truck into the mix.  (Last year my truck broke down and it was a last minute – and lucky – scramble to borrow a friends).  Jon has been plowing for several years but, even better, also has a Labrador Retriever for a co-driver.

Snow Markers

Please let us know soon if you’d like help installing plow stakes/markers in the ground.  We suggest getting them in before December 1stwhen the ground turns to cement.  (Note: the installation price is 50% of a push + cost of markers if you don’t already have them)

Pricing

There will be no change in the price per push this year.

Website

We’ve had some nice feedback on the website so please utilize it as much as possible and feel free to share feedback.  We’ve posted some resources from the Town of Concord, forecasts, and general weather updates on it.  Let us know how we can make it more helpful.

Forecast

I rarely trust the local news weekend update let alone the Farmer’s Almanac winter forecast but they are claiming it’s going to be cold and snowy.  If it’s any indication of accuracy, Sunday River ski resort has already opened for the season!

That’s it for November updates for now.  Please feel free to reach out with questions or concerns and, as always, word of mouth referrals are very appreciated!

Thanks,

Matt

What month is it?

Certainly not the forecast you’d expect for late January in New England:
Monday: High in mid-50′s
Tuesday: High in mid-40′s
Wednesday: High in upper-30′s

Enjoy it while it’s here, though – next weekend it looks to be back down to sub-freezing (and possibly single digit) weather!

Best Local Sledding Hills

Having grown up in the area and loving winter I’d like to think I’ve hit up most of the sledding hot spots in the area. Here are two of the best in the area:

DeNormandie Hill in Lincoln
This might be the most popular sledding hill I’ve ever seen, and with good reason; it’s very wide making lots of room for everyone. The parking is located in a small turnout just off Trapelo Rd just east of Minebrook Rd. The parking lot is unplowed but usually pretty well trampled. The runout on the north side of the hill is very open but on the south side (where it’s a bit steeper) the runout can be overshot with the right conditions and a dare devil’s sled. I’m not certain whether the land is privately owned or Lincoln Conservation land.

Nashawtuc Rd to Muskataquid Rd in Concord
This hill is particularly nice since you can park right at the top or bottom of the hill (I’d suggest parking at the bottom since there’s more space without blocking neighbors driveways). It is a bit narrow at the top but increases in width toward the bottom and has a really long runout. While it is not posted, I believe it is private property so take extra care to keep it clean.

What other local hills deserve mention here?

Winter Maintenance in Concord

I came across Concord’s “Winter Maintenance” brochure and thought it was worth sharing. Here are a full excerpts I found interesting (link to full text at bottom):

Plowing normally begins when accumulations reach two inches. Frequently the main roads in town are pre-treated with salt or a sand mix to prevent bonding of snow to the pavement.
If forecasts indicate a fast-moving, low-accumulation storm, plowing may be delayed until the snow stops. Once the snowfall has stopped and plowing is winding down, sanders will begin post-storm treatment of roads, parking lots, and sidewalks. Up to fifty pieces of Town and private equipment are involved in plowing and treatment operations.”

Sand is available free of charge next to the sewer pump station on Keyes Road across from the Citgo gas station.”

12/19/09 Storm (Forcasting 7-13″ of snow)

Did anyone order a white Christmas?

Long story short, it sounds like we’re going to get 7-13″ of snow this weekend. They’re forecasting the snow to start late Saturday night and continue steadily through Sunday afternoon.

I drove up from Philadelphia this morning, where there were already several inches of snow by 8am, and we passed numerous accidents along the way. I would strongly advise people against being out on the roads Sunday morning but if you have to, please drive carefully.

Wednesday’s Surprise Storm

Judging by how messy the roads were today I’d guess that most towns were caught off guard by today’s accumulation.  The rain certainly made things slick but roads seemed under control by the commute home.

Despite the weather, we received some great first-storm feedback:

Hi Matt,

Thanks so much for coming out today.  Sarah really liked you and called one of her neighbors and gave her your number also so you may get a call for another house on the street.  I’ll keep you posted during the day and see what the weather brings.  again thanks so much, it was a pleasure meeting you  and i wanted to let you know Sarah was very pleased.

Possible Storm on Saturday (12/5/09)

The National Weather Service is forecasting an ugly day tomorrow; rain turning to quite a bit of snow. Does everyone have their markers in the ground?

“Saturday Night: Snow, mainly before 4am. Low around 28. North wind between 9 and 11 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.”

Update: As of Sunday morning, we have a whopping .75″.  The trees look beautiful though!
